امانوئل تو متولد ۱۳۲۱ در خانواده ای از آشوریان در تهران است. وی در چهارده سالگی برای کار به دریا میزند. در ۲۲ سالگی پس از پایان تحصیل در دانشگاه پاناما به ایران بازمیگردد و با کار و تلاش به موفقیت های چشمگیری میرسد. اما پس از انقلاب تمام اموال وی مصادره میشود و مجبور به ترک ایران میشود.
سیروس آموزگار از وزیران دولت بخیتار نیز دیباچه‌ای بر این کتاب نوشته است.
