زیگموند فروید مجسمه موسی را نخستین بار در اولین مسافرت خود به رم در سال ۱۹۰۱ از نزدیک مشاهده کرد. از این تاریخ به بعد، بارها برای دیدن این مجسمه به رم مسافرت کرد. در ۲۵ سپتامبر ۱۹۰۱ طی نامه‌ای به همسرش می‌نویسد: «هر روز به دیدن موسیِ سان پیترو وینکولی می‌روم، شاید روزی چیزی درباره آن بنویسم.»
