شخصيت اصلي اين داستان رومن مجري يكي از معروف‌ترين برنامه‌هاي تلويزيوني است. او و همسرش رابطه‌اي بسيار سردی باهم دارند، تنها نقطه روشن زندگي او پسركوچكش سايمون است. سايمون در همان ابتداي قصه گم مي‌شود. او و پليس به دنبال كودک مي‌گردند اما هيچ اثري از او پيدا نمي‌كنند. حتي جسدش نيز كشف نمي‌شود. رفته‌رفته روح و جسم رومن رو به زوال می‌رود و زندگیش آکنده از جنون و حسرت می‌شود و منزلت اجتماعی‌اش از دست می‌رود.
